                                                                          AUDITION BRIEF & ROLES                                                                                                                                             Experienced male / female / open ethnicity actors for in-person auditions.                        

*Theatre acting & Shakespeare experience required.                                                          

*Prepare 1 Shakespeare monologue no longer than 5 minutes.                                                                                                          *Must be available for January 2027 @ Thursday 14th / Friday 15th /Saturday 16th / Sunday 17th, 9am to 5pm (non-negotiable).    *The workshop is paid a stipend.                                                                                                                                                        *The text will be supplied to actors joining the 2027 January BARD project.                                                                                                                                     

1 experienced male actor, 35-45 yrs. to play:

*Richard the Second – King of England; vaingloriously believes in his divine birthright to rule; intelligent, politically aware yet prone to rash decisions, fiscal profligacy & overt favoritism; increasingly tyrannical, self-indulgent, ruthless & self-destructive. By plays’ end is usurped by Henry Bolingbroke who becomes Henry IV.                                                                                       

 

1 experienced male or female actor, mid 50’s-early 60’s to play:                                                                     

*Edmund of Langley Duke of York – uncle to Richard II, brother to John of Gaunt Duke of Lancaster, father of Duke of Aumerle; traditionalist in his loyalty to the ‘Crown’ until social/familial/political events test his codes of conduct to breaking point.                                    *Welsh Captain – hardened career soldier, provincial, resolute, unwavering in his duty to his men. Not easily swayed.                                        *Court noble – ensemble role.                                                                                                                                                                              

 

1 female actor, late teens to mid’ 20’s to play:                                                                        

*Queen Isabella – adultescent French princess betrothed to Richard in a royal alliance between the French & English monarchies. Refined, intelligent, astute; has an affectionate & loyal relationship with Richard which is mutual.                                                                                        *Harry Percy – young son of Henry Percy Duke of Northumberland. Forthright, youthfully naïve; loyal to his father & eager to support Bolingbroke.                                                                                                                                                                  

*Court noble, Herald #2, Servant #2 - ensemble roles.

1 experienced male or female actor, 35-45 yrs. to play:                                                                                                                                  *Thomas Mowbray Duke of Norfolk – high-ranking member of Richard’s court, until he’s not. A pivotal antagonist at plays’ opening. Proud, self-assured, articulate, calculatingly aggressive & unaccustomed to backing down.                                                                                                  *Attendant, Servant #2 – ensemble roles.
